Why I Love the 1970s: An Era of Awakening and Groovy Vibes
Let’s get nostalgic for a moment…. Think back to a discovery in your youth that changed everything. Was there a time in your life when everything around you seemed to shift, and suddenly, you felt like you were seeing the world in a new light?
For me, that was the early 1970s—a decade that wasn’t just about bell bottoms and The Beatles. It was an era of awakening when we started to understand that the universe is full of mysteries that the everyday world can’t explain.
All kinds of supernatural stuff was on TV—from detectives using ESP (extra-sensory perception) to solve crimes to a Shaolin monk who roamed the American West sharing ancient Taoist wisdom (and martial arts!).
The human potential movement hit the zeitgeist. It was an era when celebrities who “got it” shared about having breakthroughs that transformed their lives and started using their voices to promote causes like saving the environment.
Peace and love permeated the air, along with incense, peppermint, and the sounds of a sitar wafting through our musical consciousness. Peter Max's influence on art was everywhere; we feasted our eyes on Yellow Submarine and our bellies on Screaming Yellow Zonkers.
And then, there were the inexplicable experiences—those strange, supernatural moments that logic couldn’t explain. Have you ever had one of those? When something just *clicks* and you realize there’s more to this world than you were taught to believe? I was fortunate that my interest was sparked during my formative teenage years, as I’ve had a lot of decades since then to explore what I experienced. I’ve come to understand that the universe isn’t as predictable as we’re led to believe. It’s filled with wonder, magic, and mystery.
Beyond the mystical experiences, the '70s were also a time of exploration in fashion and design. Bold patterns, earthy tones, and free-spirited vibes reflected the cultural shift toward individuality and creative expression. The era was a visual reminder that being innovative and bold was not only okay but celebrated.
You're invited to reflect on your life and to appreciate those moments that made you pause and say, “Wait, there’s more to this world than I realized.” Maybe, like me, you found a seed of that magic in the groovy days of the '70s. Or perhaps your moment is yet to come.
